Humidifier and filters

A humidifier pad and a furnace filter are the two small parts that a house forgets, and the Year-round plan looks at both in January.

A furnace humidifier works hardest in the coldest months and is the part most likely to be left with a pad that has turned to mineral.

Signs these need a look

  • Windows that fog or frost on the inside

  • A humidifier that has not run all winter

  • White dust on furniture near the vents

  • A filter that is grey and bowed in after a month

  • The furnace running longer than it used to

At the visit

What happens at the visit

  1. 01

Step 1: We check the pad and the water line

Pad swapped if it has hardened, water line and drain checked, humidistat setting read back to you.

  2. 02

Step 2: We look at the filter

Filter size and rating checked against what the blower is built for. We tell you when a thicker filter would hurt more than help.

  3. 03

Step 3: We set the schedule

The note lists when to change each part, in months, in your own words.

  4. 04

    Step 4: The note

Written, with the part sizes, so you can buy the next ones yourself.

The cost

What moves the cost

No dollar figures here: the plan covers the visit, and anything beyond it is quoted in writing first.

  • Humidifier type

A bypass humidifier and a steam unit are different jobs.

  • Water and pad

Hard water shortens a pad's life.

  • Filter size

A filter rack that takes a four-inch filter is not a one-inch rack.

  • Blower rating

A higher-rated filter on a blower not built for it can starve the system of air.

  • Access

A humidifier on a duct in a tight space takes longer.

Questions

Questions about this work

How often should I change my filter?

Follow the label on the filter, commonly every one to three months. A higher MERV rating, such as MERV 13, only if your system is built for it.

Do air purifiers and UV lights work?

A filter catches particles; a UV light in a duct does not make a house healthier on its own. We are glad to look at your case before you buy anything.

Does the humidifier need water all year?

No. The water is turned off at the end of the heating season, and the note says when.
