Repairs and replacement

A repair is quoted in writing before the work, and a replacement is quoted only after the system's age and readings are on the table.

Members go first on the morning list. The quote is the same one a stranger would get, less the labor discount for your plan.

When replacement comes up

  • The repair would cost more than a fair share of what a new system does

  • The system is old and has needed two repairs in a row

  • The house has changed: an addition, a finished basement

  • Rooms that never get comfortable at any thermostat setting

At the visit

What happens at the visit

  1. 01

    Step 1: We diagnose

The diagnosis fee is credited to a repair you approve, or waived on the Year-round plan.

  2. 02

Step 2: We quote in writing

Parts, labor and the plan's discount are on the page, with how long the quote holds.

  3. 03

Step 3: We repair, or we say wait

If a repair is not worth the money, we say so, and we write down what to watch.

  4. 04

    Step 4: For a replacement

We do a load calculation of the house, pull the permit, and put the equipment, the haul-away and the warranty terms in the quote.

The cost

What moves the cost

No dollar figures here: the plan covers the visit, and anything beyond it is quoted in writing first.

  • What failed

A capacitor and a compressor are not in the same range.

  • Age

Older parts may have to be ordered.

  • Access

Attic and crawlspace work takes longer.

  • Equipment

A new system is quoted on the equipment, the size and the efficiency you choose.

  • Ductwork

Leaky or undersized ducts change what a new system can do.

  • Permit and haul-away

Both are on the written quote, never added later.

Questions

Questions about this work

Do you tell people not to replace?

Yes. If the numbers say a repair is the better use of the money, the note says so.

What size system do I need?

A load calculation of the house tells us, not a rule of thumb. A bigger unit is not a better one.

Are there rebates?

Ask us what your state or utility offers. We do not promise any, and we tell you what we find.

Ask for a written quote

Call, or send the form, and the office will find a time.
